
Severn Athletic Club maintained their promotion challenge in Division Three of the Birmingham Cross-Country League. In the third race on a slippery 6 Mile Droitwich course they placed fifth of the 23 clubs amassing enough points to place third overall, slipping from second. Club captain James Rose said, “It’s been a close fight all season for the three promotion places. We have 29 and 71 points advantage on the next two challengers for the final race on February 19th.”
Rose produced his best race of the winter, 32nd after 2 miles, he doggedly gained places thereafter finishing 15th in 38 mins 54 seconds. Dave Clarke(V50) had his best league race, 35th in 41:22. Alex Hope(V55) used all his wiles to move from 65th at 1 mile to 37th in 41:26. Revelation of the season Matt Hitchings(V40) was fourth scorer, 50th in 42:08. Dan Nurse(V40) made an auspicious debut fifth scorer, 64th in 43:18. Carl Beard completed the ‘A’ team scorers, 66th in 43:22.
Severn ‘B’ team finished fifth in their category with several of them having their first race in the demanding cross-country discipline.
